The following information is provided in a document supplied by the vendor: Made by The Rev. Charles Donald in his later years, about 1920, having retired to Staffordshire after

25 years’ magnificent work in the worst slums of London. The wood used was oak 600 years old, used in the construction of a barn which had to be pulled down by the village

squire: no nails or screws were used in Sir Bevis, which was constructed using tools which were in use 600 years earlier at the time the oak was planted. These two pieces of

furniture were the first and last he ever made.
The Christmas Cupboard The Latin legend on ‘Sir Guy’ says: ‘This oak is made for Common use but dedicated to the Highest like ourselves’. The Latin on the inner door says: ‘I

sought thee without - but lo! Thou wast within’. ‘One seeks God in Nature in vain. He is within the heart.’ Le coeur a raisons car le raison ne connait pas.
Sir Guy had lived a gay life, till he met on Christmas Day a poor girl with her babe which changed his life after he gave himself to charity. This is depicted inside. They were

done by a very good professional artist, Conway.

An oak narrative Cabinet by The Rev. Charles Donald, made-up, relating to the tale of Sir Bevis, the shallow raised back surmounted by wrought iron candle sconces and colonnade

niches enclosing miniature painted figures, the pierced front carved throughout with borders of script and enclosed by a pair of doors, below is a three-panel base including a

pair of doors and revealing painted panels, on stile feet, 120cm. high by 165cm. wide; 3ft. llin. by 5ft. 5in.
The following information is provided in a document supplied by the vendor: Sir Bevis, by The Rev. Charles Donald. ‘I made it at Brampton where I got the finely seasoned oak.

The Bramptons had held the old half-timbered Hall for centuries till they sold it to my Squire, Sir John Hall. A young Brampton was shot there by the Cromwellians as he stood in

the doorway clothed in silk shirt and red stockings. The villagers say his ghost has often been seen there - a sad child in red stockings. An educated lady assured me that she

had seen him. I spent midnight alone there, but he failed to appear. In the parish was Blore(?) Heath where the famous battle was fought, and on the edge of the moat (now mostly

a bog) is a wood where, according to local legend, a great serpent once lived, the terror of villagers crossing that lonely spot. The “ghost” (red stockings) and the Snake of

Blore Heath are the background of Sir Bevis.
In the left panel, Sir Bevis is in bed and hears the red-hosed ghost who tells him the coming fate of his two sons.
The younger, a good lad, who always did as he was told, was to marry a rich heiress. All the centre panel is taken up with the wedding in the chapel - the organist and retainers

etc. - and the rich opal, a gift from the bride.
But the elder son was a very bad boy. He put live rats in his father’s boots and sewed up the sleeves of his Sunday suits, etc. So the Serpent of Blore scared his horse and

later devoured him. That is the story when I made the service cupboard for the child. That opal by the way is real and cost ?10 when opals were cheap.’
